Merryn is from the Western Arrernte people Alice Springs. She is from the stolen generation and reconnected with her family 35 years ago. Merryn has worked in Aboriginal affairs for over 30 years at grass roots level and in government, advocating for her people. A business owner on the Sunshine Coast QLD, she is the recipient of the Centenary medal for her services to Aboriginal community in Victoria and won the “Women Means Business biennial award in 2009. A recognised artist with art hanging all over the world, Merryn paints her journey and captures the memory of the beautiful country that runs through her veins. Honouring her countrymen and painting the strong women as well as the colours of the desert, flowers, waterholes and her people sitting on country.
As a chronically ill human I have to wear masks like this quite a lot when I go out. Not just to doctors appointments, but to Survival Day marches, Author signing events and even just to go down the street. Having a range of masks, all beautifully decorated with Merryn Apma paintings, really helps me to feel calm, connected and safe. The masks are actually the most comfortable ones that I have found, the fabric and stitching allow for a comfortable wear, no matter how long I'm going out for. Being able to simply change out the filters and wash the rest really gives me peace of mind that nothing my body can't handle can get through. 1. Have 3 layers so they're really functional. This also means you don't have to worry about wet spots.
2. They fit really well and all has a notch for covering the tip of the nose so they stay in place, no need to keep readjusting.
3. They're all First Australian made so they all have great designs.
4. Downside: Only two of the 11 masks I bought has writing imprinted on them: the Warrior Dreaming by Lorni Byland and another one that says AMPA. These info are minimalist and miscroscopic (AMPA one is actually huge), and are integrated as part of the design, so they don't really interfere with the designs. They help tell the story of each specific mask so I hope they all keep them next time. Better yet, they could include a short story on the inside of the mask to help confirm Google information.
